This website contains a searchable database of images which is the outcome of work undertaken by Revd Dr Paul M. Collins’ (see right)

Over the period 2000 – 2006, he has conducted research in South India into cultural and religious practices. The database also relates to Paul M. Collins’ new book, Context, Culture and Worship: The Quest for Indian-ness, published by ISPCK and Christian Inculturation in India, published by Ashgate.

"Drawing together international and Indian sources, and new research on the ground in South India, this book presents a unique examination of the inculturation of Christian Worship in India. Paul M. Collins examines the imperatives underlying the processes of inculturation - the dynamic relationship between the Christian message and cultures, and then explores the outcomes of those processes in terms of architecture, liturgy and ritual and the critique offered of these outcomes, especially by Dalit theologians. This book highlights how the Indian context has informed global discussions, and how the decisions of World Council of Churches, Vatican II and Lambeth Conferences have impacted upon the Indian context." - Ashgate Publishing

The images (see left, an example of a Temple in Karnataka) focus on South Indian cultural and religious faiths. In particular this database is offered as a resource for those interested in the inculturation of Christian worship and buildings. But it will also be useful for any whose interest lies in understanding more fully the rich cultural context of South India both historic and contemporary.
